Heath Shiatsu

Shiatsu, what is it?

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese acupressure massage based on the centuries-old traditions of Chinese Medicine. Related closely to acupuncture, Shiatsu utilises thumb, whole hand and, in the case of Barefoot Shiatsu, foot, pressure on the body, together with satisfying stretches and joint movements.

It is common for people to feel both invigorated and relaxed at the same time after Shiatsu.

A session can be carried out on a stool (Seated Shiatsu, usually half hour treatments focusing on head, neck, shoulders, back and upper body joints), or on a futon mattress at ground level (Full Body Shiatsu, usually lasting a full hour). You do not take your clothes off for Shiatsu.

Shiatsu is an holistic therapy that takes into account the recipient's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual states if relevant, meaning that it is effective for a wide range of symptoms. Recent research has shown that Shiatsu is effective for back, neck, and joint pain; stress and sports injuries.

Shiatsu is suitable for babies, children, teenagers, and adults, both young and older. Each practitioner is trained to make their treatments appropriate for varying ages and symptoms.

Typically a session that lasts an hour goes something like this:
First you will be asked questions about your health history or fill in a questionnaire. 5-20 mins.
Then the practitioner will ask you what you would like to get out of the treatment. Approx. 5 mins.
Then you will sit or lie down for the hands-on part. You are encouraged to give feedback during the session if you need or want to. 35-45 mins.
After this you will be left for a few minutes to relax and 'wake-up' while the practitioner washes her/his hands and gets you a drink of water.
Finally you will be able to give feedback on the session and offered recommendations which may cover diet, exercises or pressure points for example.

The Shiatsu Centre offers a wide range of prices for this fantastic therapy. All of our Shiatsu practitioners have studies for a minimum of 3 years at a reputable school, as well as completing post-graduate training and most have the letters MRSS (Member of the professional Register of the Shiatsu Society) after their name. Graduates have fulfilled all their 3 years study requirements and hold a school diploma. Students are either in their second of third year of study.

(It is important to note that those Shiatsu students in their second year are already more experienced than new therapists from other disciplines who are only required to study for a year or less. You are therefore advised to check out their credentials before embarking on a session.)

Year 2 Student Practitioner £20 per hour
